Hello everyone, I'm in the early planning stages of a personal project to set up a smart home automation system using a Linux-based Raspberry Pi setup. My background is in electronics and embedded systems, but I'm relatively new to working with Linux for this kind of application. I’m hoping to get some advice from the community which lightweight…

Hello, I'd probably start with an open source off the shelf solution such as https://www.home-assistant.io/ There are tutorials on their site that cover installation onto a raspberry pi so you should be able to get to and running fairly quickly. It sounds like a fun project so please do let us know how you get on.

Oh yes IFTTT definitely a good shout. I've had some success with it in the past. When our son was a baby we had real trouble keeping his room warm in the winter because the upstairs thermostat was out in the hall which was nice and toasty from all the heat of the house rising to meet it, while his bedroom with the door closed was cold. I …

I assume your son is no longer a baby, but nowadays you can get Nest temperature sensors to put in different areas of your home. You can officially tell Nest to control the HVAC based on the temperature of the family room during the day and the temperature of the bedroom at night, for example.

Indeed not. He's 7 now. Yes you can get those free standing mounts, but I don't have any. My thermostats are wired into the wall. It'd be cool if you could just pop them off the wall and stick them on a stand anywhere you like, but alas you cannot.

P.S. Here in the US, our Nests are directly connected to the HVAC system hardwired in the wall, so they aren’t movable at all.

Great project idea, and you're already ahead with your electronics background. For the OS, Raspberry Pi OS Lite is a solid starting point—lightweight, well-supported, and ideal for headless setups. If you want something even more stripped down, check out DietPi or Ubuntu Server for Pi, but the trade-off is slightly less community support.

Is the Apple
Vision
Pro
worth it if I already have an Oculus Quest? I'm not a big gamer, but I have my entire wedding recorded in VR, and I love watching mini-movies and shows in 3D VR. My husband is into things like Red Matter. I honestly don't remember if I have a Quest 2 or 3.

Oddly, you are required to go through an hour long tutorial/demo at the Apple Store before they will sell you a

You probably have a Quest 2. My younger son and I really enjoyed Red Matter 2. My goto game is In Death Unchained but I still do a little Beat Saber now and then. I used to use BigScreen to watch movies but now I find the Oculus TV app better as I can easily change the viewing angle, and the warped/wrapped screen is a plus. I can't imagine the …

One of my sons spent a lot setting up some other VR gear. And then broke his TV playing a game (punched the TV). 3 years later it sits in a box because it's out of date and new models that are worth buying are not worth buying (not going to rewrite that.) For me, not worth it.

I usually put a square tile in the middle of the floor to stand on when playing Beat Saber. Eleven Table Tennis doesn't need it because I orient myself to the VR table. I play In Death Unchained seated because there are too many vertigo-inducing places in the middle world where I could easily fall over. Some of them make my feet tingle.

I find it vertigo-inducing to be sitting!! I simply cannot handle when what I see simulates me moving (e.g. walking in a room), but my physical body is not moving. It's fine if things are moving around me, but if *I'm* meant to be walking, I need to be physically walking in order to not get sick.

I still get vertigo at times when sitting (like jumping and landing on the edge of a cliff) but at least I can't fall down and crack my head.

without overwhelming the design.
